I started seeing Balloon pants in runway photos a couple of years ago. But haven't really seen them anywhere on real people walking down real streets. This leads me to conclude that the balloon pant trend is still ON ITS WAY IN. I refuse to consider them out of fashion until they are hanging in the sale racks at Target.
Well here's an example of a homemade sewing pattern for all you early fashion adopters. (Or in this case, late adopters.) There are many more ways to make them as there are number of names for them: (hammer time pants, harem pants, bollywood pants, parachute pants, etc.) But this is the super easy way:
The basic idea of the above A-shape pattern can be modified get your desired effect. If you are thinking, "What desired effect could I possibly want with balloon pants?" then look no further!
For more "balloonish" quality, you can lower the crotch line and make the legs further apart. For a more gathered waistline, you can cut the waist more generously. They can be gathered at the knee or flared at the ankle. The Balloon Pant is an entire fashion category!
I used soft chambray for these kid's pants.
Now if you want to get all fancy, try a balloon jumper!
(She's hiding her massive piggy bank in these balloon pants since I just bribed her with $5 to put them on.)
