role play

One of her very favorite roles to play is school teacher. She comes home from school every day enlisting the little sister to play her eager student.  But the little sister prefers to play "mischievous child", and believe me, it doesn't require any acting skills for little sister to master that role.

Her most favorite role is poor poor Orphan Annie. She knows this character inside and out. Has even played the title role, Annie, in a small and local  musical theatre class/performance and again more recently in her school's variety show. We consider ourselves very lucky to have our house constantly echo the songs "Maybe" and "Tomorrow" which she sings so earnestly, it could break your heart.  Doesn't she look sweet?

Vintage Fabric Galore

I have been hoarding these 1960's fabrics for some time now! And I love them so much that they are displayed in a glass armoire in my living room. Seriously. Is that normal?

Most were scored at flea markets and some on Ebay. And even though I've used quite a few for curtains, evidently I don't have enough windows in my house because I still have a bunch left over.  (You can spy these fabrics in action here, here and here.)

The bold colors and the simple symmetry of these flower designs (hallmark of Scandinavian 60's floral textile design) has served as inspiration to some of the newest hair clips in the Giddy Giddy collection - most notably Vintage Flora hair clips. 

The 60's era has been an enormous inspiration to some of our current day textile designers too, including the ever so brilliant Orla Kiely who has reinterpreted retro and infused it with her incredible sense of color and rhythm.

I am still learning more about these vintage textiles and others like these and hope to report back when I've collected more research on them.

Creatie Growth is an awesome art studio/gallery and organization in Oakland, CA that fosters the creative expression of 150 incredible people who happen to have disabilities. We recently attended a gallery opening there. Proceeds from sold art not only go back to fund the organization but also provide the artists with an income and a means to live independently.

This is part of the workspace that is attached to the Gallery.  The ceramics studio represents only a fraction of this incredible workspace. Don't you want to live here?
